Saftronics designed, manufactured and supplied a 1.5MW Synchronous Motor DC Excitation Control Panel for Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia, working in partnership with our approved local agent, Apple Connection Engineering Solutions. The system was developed for a mill application, providing precise excitation control to ensure reliable motor operation and improved electrical performance.
The commissioning of the synchronous motor excitation panel was successfully completed in August 2025. During commissioning, the system was configured to deliver a variable DC output of 0–123VDC at a maximum current of 145A, meeting the operational requirements of the motor. The excitation controller automatically regulates the rotor excitation current, maintaining a power factor close to unity across the full operating load range.
By continuously optimizing the motor’s excitation, the system improves power factor performance, reduces reactive power demand and contributes to the efficient operation of the milling process. This project demonstrates Saftronics’ expertise in delivering customized motor control solutions for critical mining applications throughout Southern Africa.
