Electrowinning Rectifier and Transformer

Copper Mine Processing Plant

Saftronics received an order from Société Congolaise pour le Traitement du Terril de Lubumbashi SAS (STL) for the design and supply of an Electrowinning Rectifier and Transformer for their copper processing operations in Lubumbashi, located in the southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The system was designed to deliver a maximum output of 37,000 Amperes DC at 0–50 Volts, providing the high-current, low-voltage power required for the client’s SX-EW (Solvent Extraction – Electrowinning) copper process. Saftronics supplied a 12-pulse Thyristor Rectifier and Transformer incorporating two Inter-Phase Transformers (IPTs) to ensure reliable, efficient DC power conversion for this demanding application.

With a power rating of 1.85 MW and a 34.5 kV, three-phase, 50 Hz supply, the system was engineered to meet the operational requirements of the plant while delivering stable performance and dependable operation. The equipment was manufactured to Saftronics’ high engineering standards, supporting long-term reliability in a continuous industrial process.

Commissioning of the system was scheduled to commence in September 2023, marking another successful medium-power rectifier solution supplied by Saftronics to the African mining industry.
